I picked up these two little butterfly ornaments for Elise's room even before she was born, but I never quite knew what to do with them.
I tried tacking them up on the wall with poster putty, but gravity was not cooperating. Then I thought, what better place for butterflies than a butterfly jar?
I started with a pickle jar, cleaned it well and removed the label. I also scrubbed off all the printed-on dates and numbers on the glass.
I made sure the butterflies would fit and thought about how I would arrange them.
Next I covered the lid with a leftover piece of scrapbook paper using Mod Podge. If the thought of wrapping something round like that is perplexing, there's a good tutorial at Design Sponge.
Lastly, I put hot glue on the bodies of the butterflies and stuck them directly to the inside of the jar. I tried to adjust them a little but, those babies were not going anywhere. The coolness of the glass made the hot glue harden really quickly.
I love it! My butterflies were after-Christmas clearance from World Market, but I recently saw similarly sized butterflies at the dollar store, 3 for $1. (And they weren't ugly!) This idea would also be supercute done with bugs or frogs instead of butterflies.
